Importance of Student Advising
This allows for instructors and students/advisees to get to know one another as individuals and create an atmosphere of caring and professional concern for students. Every student is encouraged to meet with their advisor on a regular basis. This will allow an advisor to assist students in:
- Evaluate the student’s suitability to the discipline chosen
- Review the requirements for the degree, options, and possible electives
- Identify deficiencies in the student’s record and ways to correct them
- Discuss career and graduate school options
The following provides a brief topic overview in which faculty frequently advise students:
- Graduation/degree requirements
- Co-curricular opportunities
- Scholarly skills
- Student skills (how to function in higher education)
- Internship opportunities
- Career opportunities, career building
- Personal issues related to success in college
