Policy Change: Proposal to add a course to the BSW Curriculum

Presented by Jeffrey Olson

BSW students currently begin their senior project in the fall semester of the senior year.  As part of the basic research course they completed a literature review and proposal for research. Then during the spring semester the student worked with the instructor for Methods IV to complete the project.  Of Six potential graduates, three students completed all requirements except the senor project.  One is actively working to complete it, another has registered to complete it, and the third has not made contact with the department to complete the project.

The social work faculty decided that students needed more support in the spring semester to finish this project.  IT was also decided that rather than having every student independently develop, work on and complete a senior project, that this option would be supplemented with a group project option. A student would be able to choose to work on a group project overseen by a faculty member in conjunction with a local agency, or to do an independent senior project guided by a faculty member.

The proposed change is also in line with recommendations made by the Council of Social Work Education Commissioner who evaluated our program last spring. She identified the research component of the OLC BSW Program to be the weakest link in a strong program. This proposed change addresses the substance of her critique, along with other internal changes not needing external approval.

Humanities and Social Sciences Department: Proposal for new course: Lit 343 Literature of Nature and the Environment

Presented by Judith Graham

Literature of Nature and the Environment

How does this course have the potential of reinforcing traditional Lakota culture?

The inclusion of Native American writers as part of the course would reinforce the traditional Lakota culture.

How much feedback did you get from other Native Americans?

Was there feedback at the student or staff level?

At the staff level it was an informal questioning.  It might appeal to students as the other literature courses don’t address this.

From the Students it was a casual questioning about how they would feel about reading Native American authors.  The feedback was positive. Not formal.

The text will be an anthology of the literature of the environment (Luther Standing Bear is a part of this anthology). Literature and the environment: A Reader on Nature and Culture by Anderson, Slovic, and O’Grady.

Anthology of Luther Standing Bear’s writings (non-fiction)

Proposal for course change: Course title number change from Lit 303 Minority Literature to Lit 243 Minority Literature.

Presented by Judith Graham

This has completed two readings in Instructional Affairs.

This was done to avoid confusion with older status sheets the number 213 was already used in the past.  The number 243 was chosen as it hadn’t been used before.

This course is part of the A.A. degree requirement and so the number change is necessary.

The course was important enough to remain as part of the degree.

Motion to approve of the course number change from Lit 303 to Lit 243 to accurately reflect the A.A. Status

Proposal to reintroduce: ENGL 453 Writing your family and community history

Presented by Kimberly He Crow Bettelyoun

Is this a face to face class or online?

Maybe a face to face or hybrid course

How would you do this class?

It would be offered at one center as a face to face. Perhaps at Piya Wiconi because the archives and the library are here.

What is the purpose?

There is a need for upper level writing classes for students.  Students would be prepared for graduate studies writing.

It’s a program elective in the Bachelors degree.

Just reviving a class?

Sort of as this class wasn’t taught for a long time, and it took a while to figure out what happened to the class as it disappeared from the catalog.

It was probably due to a miscommunication.

There was a syllabus by Jean Smith.

Can a community take this class?

If they had English I and II they could take it.

Instructional Affairs Second reading was on February 15th 2010

Question about bundled items

Proposal for a new course SPCM 233 Elements of Human Communication Skills

Required course for Oral and Written Concentration for the BA in English and Communication Studies. This course is offered as part of our core classes. Tactfulness, diplomacy, conflict resolution, courtesy, etc., both from the Lakota and the non-native perspective, all play an important part in the communication process.

Presented by Kimberly He Crow Bettelyoun

Is this going to be a required class?

It fits into the core for the A.A. degree

This class and Multicultural Communication will be required.

When you bring the degree to the next meeting we need the old one and the new one.

When it’s a new course or new degree that goes to the board, and if it’s a change in an existing degree or course then that goes to Dr. Giraud.

Request more information on new degree courses. How will this affect the whole degree? Student status sheets? What do we need to look for?

How does this help our students? What can they do with this degree?

English is appealing to students but literature isn’t.  The name of the degree wasn’t appealing, but the change in name may be. It opens up the possibilities, and once they are beyond the A.A. Level they can still choose their path.

Overall focus will be writing and communication?

It allows students to pursue different paths.

Change from Remedial courses to Foundational Courses

It needs to be noted as to where each part of this packet is going.

Somewhere it needs to be stated which part of the packet is going to the board and which part is going to Dr. Giraud.

Note: For clarification the 18 month AUTOMOTIVE Certificate is new.  The rest of the packet is updates by the Applied Science Department.  We have approved of each separately.

The routing sheet says that it is to modify curriculum not policy.

We need to let the committees know how the routing sheets need to be done.

Any policy and procedures must come through this committee.

When something like that comes through they need to have the routing sheet.

Clarification of the routing sheet

We need to update our form.

The addition of a line on the routing sheet to reflect items approved of by Dr. Giraud.
