INDIAN PREFERENCE IN EMPLOYMENT (POLICY)
A. The location of the Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, as well as the nature of
funding for the college, makes it attractive to utilize a locally derived force. To the extent possible
the college will grant preference in hiring to qualified Indian people.
B. An active Indian preference program is to be implemented in concert with each program funded by the BIA,
HIS and the Office of Indian Education (Dept. of Education).
C. In the order of precedence, local recruitment sources will be first utilized in attracting qualified
Indian personnel. In the event these efforts are not successful, outside Indian sources and, finally,
non-Indian sources may be utilized in attracting qualified faculty and staff.
The administrative staff shall develop a rating system for preference in hiring. The rating system
shall include the following criteria in order of preference:
1. Candidate that is a veteran and registered with the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
2. Candidate registered with the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
3. Candidate that is a veteran and registered in another tribe.
4. Candidate registered with another tribe.
5. Candidate that is a veteran and non-Indian.
6. Candidate that is non-Indian.
Additional factors (i.e. education, experience) shall be added up the above criteria.
