Oglala Lakota College has nine district college centers, an extension in Rapid City, SD, a college center in Eagle Butte, SD, on the Cheyenne River Reservation, a nursing program, and a masters program. Each of these centers plus the two programs has a student organization which is made up of the students who are currently enrolled at each center or in each program. The major focus of the student organization is facilitating camaraderie through the promotion of student activities throughout the year, and they function at the center or program level only.
Each student organization has its own set of by-laws which provides the guidelines under which the organization operates. Based on these by-laws, students elect officers at the beginning of each fall semester. These officer positions include president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, student senator, student representative, and sergeant at arms although not every student organization utilizes all positions.
The student senators from each student organization form the Oglala Lakota College Student Senate whose primary purpose is to serve as the primary representative of student interests in policy formation and as an intermediary between administration, the student body, and faculty, and it also serves to represent the views of the students as members of the campus community. A major purpose of the Student Senate is to improve campus life, and other purposes include the development of resources and implementation of activities directly related to benefitting the student body as a whole.
The student representatives from each student organization serve on a rotating membership on the Piya Wiconi Okolakiciye which is the campus organization created to provide a forum for addressing college-wide concerns and making consensus policy and procedures recommendations to the president of the college and, through the president, to the Oglala Lakota College Board of Trustees.
