My name is Elaine Gibbons and I am the Director of the Wounded Knee College Center of Oyuhpe Community/Manderson, SD. I am married to Glen; we have six children: Shane, Kaitlin, Mackenzie, Amaya, Jevon & Marshall and we reside in the White Horse Creek Community. I'm originally from the Pass Creek District and am a landowner there. I have lived in Oyuhpe for over twelve years; while here I obtained my degrees from Oglala Lakota College; AA in Lakota Studies 2001; AAS Counseling 2003; Bachelor of Human Services 2004. Presently I'm taking Lakota Language III as it is my goal to be a fluent Lakota speaker. I plan to begin my Master in Lakota Leadership/Management in the Fall 09; eventually I want to apply to P. A. school at the University of South Dakota Stanford school of Medicine. My parents are Clara Poor Bear & Frank Marshall; my maternal grandparents are Julia Lone Wolf & Theodore Poor Bear; my paternal grandparents are Esther Belt & Pete Marshall; my great grandparents are: Jenny Nelson & Felix Lone Wolf and Bessie Two Elk & Albert Poor Bear; Lizzie Walks Out & Belt and Minnie Arapahoe & Frank Marshall. My great great-grandfather is Tom Nelson, son of John Y. Nelson and Yellow Elk Woman, brother of John Y. Jr. James, Rose (Ecoffey) & Julia (Goings). Tom married Susie Salway. My Lakota name is Eagle Feather Woman and it comes from my maternal grandfather Felix Lone Wolf who is half Lakota & half Cheyenne but was raised by Sicangu-his adopted grandfather is Eagle Feather. My sisters are: Holly Quinn, Tami Ballenger; Alicia Kroeze, Marci Sharpe & my brothers are Richard Cross & Eugene Mullen. Through Lakota kinship, I have numerous siblings-too much to name. It is important for me to know who my relatives are and I teach this to my children. Being raised by my maternal grandfather, he shared this knowledge with me. My hobbies include learning & teaching my children and community youth about our Lakota culture, song/dance, language and traditions. I'm an active parent and promote healthy activities & life styles for my children; I am alcohol & tobacco/drug free. I enjoy planning family activities and making happy memories for my children. I love to travel (not for extended periods); take pictures of family & landscapes; I enjoy meeting people and learning about other cultures. I also enjoy visiting with local Elders; I take them food and help them clean their homes or give them a ride to the store, take them wood and help out where I can. Generosity & humility are two virtues that need to be taught to our children and I take them with me to teach them the importance of giving & helping our Elders and people. As the Director of Wounded Knee College Center, I work diligently to serve the needs of our students and believe in working together as a team; I promote 'Wolakolkiciyapi-learning Lakota ways of Life in the community' by partnering with community organizations and providing networks with other organizations/tribal programs to benefit students/community members. As a graduate & (professional) student of Oglala Lakota College, I'm grateful for our tribal college because it allows me to stay home, work to support my family while obtaining a quality education. I had a full time job, mother to two small children and attended school full time for three years; it was hard work but it paid off. Even though I have a Bachelor degree, I continually challenge myself and strive to meet the next level; right now it's to pursue my Master's degree and P.A. certification.
