The goal of the Strengthening Our Science and Math Infrastructure (SOSMI) Project is to create a pipeline for developing American Indian industry and teaching professionals in science, math and technology.Various facets include:

1.The NASA Honors Program is a six week, pre-college, summer residential program that has the primary goal of increasing the number of American Indians entering and achieving success in college.The program provides student participants with supplemental curriculum enrichment with an emphasis in math, science and technology.

2. The Strengthening Our Science and Math Infrastructure Project will focus on producing K-12 teachers that have endorsements in science and math.Pre-service and in-service teachers will have an opportunity to pursue a Masterís Degree, Bachelorís Degree and work towards being certified to teach in the areas of math or science.Technology enhancement training opportunities will be a part of this program (Information Technology for Teachers - June 17-28).Teachers will be working on developing lesson plans that align with content standards in math and science.2 four week sessions: June 2-July 12 and June 16-July 12†† (Information)

3.Teaching With Technology is a two-week immersion program that will increase skills in instructional technology integration, web mastering, curriculum standards integration, research, content resources, instructional technology technical support, and preparation of course materials for distance learning (i.e. WebCT, Blackboard, PicTel and Internet).2 two week sessions:June 2-14 and June 30-July 12. 4. Technology Technicians will be offered a two-week training program that will compliment the needs of pre-service and in-service teacher in the areas of technology.Technicians will participate in workshops that include web mastering, video conferencing course delivery techniques and preparing materials for distance learning.Technicians will have advanced training sessions in the areas of troubleshooting, maintenance of video conferencing systems, administering WebCT/Blackboard, local network/server issues, including, but not limited to chats, email and discussion boards.June 16-June 28

5.College Classes will be offered for entering college freshmen, environmental science, and information technology majors.Classes will be offered for six weeks during the summer (June 2, 2000 - July 12, 2000) by Oglala Lakota College on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.Please check the web site for current course offerings and a program application.
