A method of providing people in economically disadvantaged areas, with a means to potentially creating a source of revenue for themselves, in spite of the lack of jobs is through web development.

Our instructional goal will be to provide students with hardware, training, and knowledge to commercially develop web sites in their homes independently of the need for unavailable technical support as a form of economic development.

The instructional goal will be accomplish by completing the following objectives.

  1. Teach participants how to maintain, diagnose, and repair computers using national recognized A+ certification materials and trainings materials.
  2. Familiarize students with laws involving copyright and the Internet, and website development practices and opportunities.
  3. Provide training to participants to increase familiarization with web page development.
  4. Continue participants training opportunities so they can further their skills to work towards Webmaster certification and produce commercial quality websites.

Upon completion of these objective student will:

Many of the participants targeted for this training have experience in surfing and using the internet but are unfamiliar with computer hardware maintenance and website development.  This training will give them the opportunity to gain skills in the areas of computer hardware and web development.

Phase I of the program will be to begin implementing the A+ certification for diagnosing and repair computer hardware.  Through the completion of A+ certification training, participants and the web development activities will not be slowed or hindered due to the isolation and lack of available computer hardware expertise.  With this training participants could eventually contribute to creating opportunities for economic development as computer technicians for their communities.  The skills to maintain, diagnose, and repair computers is the first step in ensuring that students can continue their web master training and web development projects independently.

The A+ certification training will be completed in a lab situation using a hands-on approach.  The training will be completed in 1.5 hour time periods and will occur three days per week, for six weeks.. The labs will be supplemented with reading and lecture components.  They will disassemble and reassemble the computers, and go through other software and hardware diagnostic methods.  Participants will gain an understanding of how a computers and the associated components and process work.  Through this they will be able to diagnosis computer systems effectively and in a procedural manner and will conceptual apply diagnostic routines and processes to fix common, simulated errors.

Objective two of this training will be to acquaint participants with laws governing web site development and Internet use.  Secondly participants will gain an understanding of what constitutes an effective website and what are some potential web development opportunities.

During the training participants will familiarize themselves with copyright laws and laws associated with Internet use.  Discussion and activities on identifying effective and ineffective websites will be completed.  Searches on the Internet to locate examples of effective and ineffective websites and websites that violate copyright or Internet related laws will be found and documented as a skill building project.  Participants will develop websites and apply their new skills by critiquing other participantŐs websites that contain intentional violations and ineffective practices.  The participant reviewer will document their finds of the websites and compared it to a author completed survey listing the intentional problems with the site.

Objective three will demonstrate the skill and understand participants have developed as tested through the creation of a web site.  The skills will be developed through and intensive course that will provide the participants with a detailed understanding about developing websites, and what development tools are available for website authoring.  The focus of the websites development will be for their local community and will include general information and services, geographic location, news, and special and annual events of the community.  Participants will continue the development and implementation of the website and maintain and expand the web site throughout the year.

Objective four will be to continue to offer web certification training to participants at-distance so they can continue their web development skills and work towards attaining their web master certification.  Due to the comprehensiveness of the web master certification of the program, it is unlikely that we will complete their certification in one six week period.  More time will be needed to complete their web development skills as they progress towards web master status.  The participants will complete on-line training modules and web development projects to further develop their skill level.

Teach participants how maintain, diagnose, and repair computers using national recognized A+ certification materials and trainings materials

A structured program that provides the skill base to participants to maintain, diagnose, and repair computers and work towards achieving their A+ certification.

Participants will be able to keep their computer operating and complete their web development training modules without access to a local computer technician.

A pre and post test addressing skill level.

Rare documented calls for students needing assistance in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing their computer.

Familiarize students with laws involving copyright and the Internet, and website development practices and opportunities

Provide discussion, internet searches, and activities for participants to expand their knowledge in this area.

Participants will be able to apply copyright and laws regarding internet use and be able to identify effective websites.

-A pre and post survey regarding copyright and internet laws.

-Peer review sheets on website review activities.

Provide training to participants to increase familiarization with web page development

A beginner level program will be implemented teaching participants how to develop web sites and what tools are available for use.

Participants will be able to develop basic websites using the skills and development tools that were identified in the training module.

Web server hosting basic websites from participants.

Continue participants training opportunities so they can further their skills to work towards Webmaster certification and produce commercial quality websites.

-Implement an online module to continue web development training that will progress participants towards achieving their webmaster certification.

-Have participants continue to develop and maintain their website.

-Participants will participate in online activities that will move them towards web master certification.

-A basic website will mature into a more advanced website as skill levels increase.

-Server maintaining on-line training courses with login histories, continued development of basic website to progress it to an advanced level of website.

-List of participants that receive webmaster certification.
