Humanities (Dr. Holly Boomer)___Hello OLC faculty: I hope this memo finds you well this spring semester!  It is that time of the semester when the Humanities Department turns its thoughts toward administering the Holistic Essay exam to our Freshman English 103 students as a department assessment. Last semester the department administered the essay exam toward the end of the semester to examine students’ writing skill improvement over the course of the semester. We will attempt the same approach this spring.

Our scoring session is tentatively scheduled for the Friday of the 15th week, May 12, from 10:00 -2:00 pm at the Pine Ridge College Center. We will begin promptly at 10 am with a training session on how the department uses the writing rubric to score essays. The training session invites discussion about rhetoric, writing and mechanics of writing. Once the training session is complete, then all participating faculty will read and score essays. Lunch will be provided as we usually read through the lunch hour.

Please contact Holly Boomer or Anthony J. Fresquez in the Humanities Department if you have any questions with this holistic scoring process. The department phone number at Piya Wiconi is 455-6091. We hope you can join us for our scoring session!

To Dawn Frank for giving the welcome address – great job!  (President Shortbull spoke to the entire conference group Monday morning in RC – before Mayor Shaw!)

To Theresa Lone Hill, Leslie Henry, Julia Goings, Randy Two Crow (also a guide one of the buses), Dr. Sylvio Mannel, Dr. Deig Sandoval, Charles Comes Killing, Michele May, Marty Frogg, for their presentations; to Myreen Iron Cloud, Stephanie Two Crow for opening the bookstore, and to Kathy Aplan and Tony Brave for filming.

To the maintenance and custodian crew for setting up and cleaning the conference room and other buildings and especially for cleaning up the mess early Monday morning before President Shortbull arrived!
