Humanities (Dr. Holly Boomer)___Hello OLC faculty: I hope this memo finds you well this spring semester!  It is that time of the semester when the Humanities Department turns its thoughts toward administering the Holistic Essay exam to our Freshman English 103 students as a department assessment. Last semester the department administered the essay exam toward the end of the semester to examine students’ writing skill improvement over the course of the semester. We will attempt the same approach this spring.  Our scoring session is tentatively scheduled for the Friday of the 15th week, May 12, from 10:00 -2:00 pm at the Pine Ridge College Center. We will begin promptly at 10 am with a training session on how the department uses the writing rubric to score essays. The training session invites discussion about rhetoric, writing and mechanics of writing. Once the training session is complete, then all participating faculty will read and score essays. Lunch will be provided as we usually read through the lunch hour.  Please contact Holly Boomer or Anthony J. Fresquez in the Humanities Department if you have any questions with this holistic scoring process. The department phone number at Piya Wiconi is 455-6091. We hope you can join us for our scoring session!

Instructional  (Dr. Giraud)___Arrowmight Literacy Project Workship presented by Marcia Krawll and Dr. Rongo Wetere of New Zealand on Friday, May 12, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Piya Wiconi Round Room (lunch will be served).  The Arrowmight Literacy Project is a Maori and New Zealand community based English literacy program adapted from literacy programs developed by the Latin American and Carribbean Pedagogical University.  All are encouraged to attend the workshop.  This is an opportunity to learn about a literacy project sponsored by an indigenous peoples organization in New Zealand.  This workshop will be of particular interest to tutors, counselors, center directors, faculty and chairs, but Piya Wiconi staff are encouraged to attend as well.

Business Office (Arlene Quist)___Announcement from Mia Ferguson.  Happy spring everyone!

It’s that time again for me to ask for the quarterly reports for those of you who get paid out of more than one grant. I am requesting the reports for the period Jan-March 2006.   Please keep in mind that the reports due for April-June will be due soon.  Also of you have not completed Oct-Dec 2005, I would like those too.   For those of you who get paid 100% out of one funding source I will need the semi-annual certification forms at the end of April.  These forms are required of us for our audits.

The forms were sent to you via email.  If you have already handed in your reports, thank you very much and disregard this reminder.  Thank you.  If you have any questions please give me a call at 6016.

Also, a note from Rose Fresquez via the family of Pearl Cottier:  Please do not send flowers to Pearl at the hospital because she cannot have them in the room with her at this time.  A real good suggestion sent our way was to buy her a plant – rosebush or something – and plant outside her home in Martin where she can see it and enjoy it when she returns home to recuperate.  Great idea!
