Development (Marilyn
Pourier)___I love this whole communication bit! I’m happy everyone is back in the groove
again and ready and willing to spread the good word. Speaking of the good word; have you seen the
Fall 2006 edition of the Tribal College Journal (TCJ)? There is an article in there titled “Oglala
Lakota Sweeps AIHEC Film Competition.” Congratulations
to the students and all that have worked with them to take them this far. It also includes writings by tribal college
students – included are Jesse Short Bull with his story Dot Com Indian and Sandy White Shield with One Hundred Miles Back in Time.
I’m pretty proud of you. I have
been emailing to “allstaff” the announcements for news articles and stories
from TCJ and I will continue to do so.
Each quarter they feature a different issue and I am always hopeful
someone from OLC will step forward with an article. I don’t know how they are chosen but if you
think your work falls in one of the categories call the TCJ editor and convince
her that it does. There is also a
section called On Campus for news briefs.
<><><> This is sort of a rush job Bulletin. I wanted to report on the article in RC
Journal that reports on the work OLC is doing with the SDSM&T but time has
caught up with me. I will include in
next week’s bulletin.
Student Services
(Billi Hornbeck)___SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE. Students!
Apply Today, the deadline is coming up fast!! SEPTEMBER 8, 2006. Applications are done on-line at www.collegefund.org. Students must create a log in and password,
fill out the personal information, type in the personal essay and submit it. Then the student will need to contact the
center staff and ask them to take a picture, this will make the application
complete. Please refer to the student
planner/handbook for the content of the essay.
It is suggested to type it in word, save it, then copy & paste it to
the on-line application.

four Bachelor’s classes in Pine Ridge this semester. Next semester we will begin our Kyle cohort. One of our B.A. classes is a service-learning
course, “Family Literacy”, so if you have an interest in us providing services
in the area of Family Literacy, please call our department. In addition, we are continuing to offer A.A.
in Early Childhood and CDA (Child
Development Associate) Credential classes.
Please call the Early Childhood Department at 455-6052 for more

Learning Resource Ctr
( Michele May)___HELLOOOOOOOO EVERYBODY!!!!! Welcome back......COME GET YOUR LIBRARY CARD!!!!.........we
have soooo much news and goings’ on at the library…special invitation to each
of you to come on over and sit on the best new bench in the west….. outside the
library door….THANKS TO THE GREATEST CARPENTER CLASS ON EARTH and then come on
in, check out the new look in the library…….you know how some women are about
moving furniture…..well…..we moved furniture….
<><><> Our summer was great, we had four youth
opportunity program participants that helped us in the library and we are still
recovering…they were awesome….we have a new face in the library, her name is
Victoria Brown Bull and comes to us from the OST Employment Opportunity
Program, thank you Victoria!!!!!…..Madonna Whirlwind Horse is back in school
and will start this Tuesday as the library work study student………YIPPITY
SKIPPITY FOR MADONNA AND US!!!!! <><><> Next week Master Marty of the Archives will
be in Brookings teaching SDSU staff, students and faculty about Tribal
Archives. Marty is participating in the
institutional exchange program between SDSU and OLC. Several weeks ago SDSU
sent their archivist to spend 3 days in our basement, we figure turnabout is
fair play. The archives will be closed
from September 5-8. <><><> Somebody come read Bleed, Blister, and
Purge: A History of Medicine on the American Frontier……we want your book
review…..maybe we will send it to nursing……
<><><> The Grandview Publishing Native American
Children’s Series by Kenneth Thomasma is
now available at Woksape Tipi and coming soon to all the center libraries,
these books are written for intermediate reading for ages 9-13. You gotta see
this series, the stories are just great!!!!!! <><><> Just to lighten your load from the evening
news….get a good laugh with the new series available by Patrick F.
McManus. He uses
simple observations about human nature, doesn’t give us solutions to world
problems or tell us how to get rich, his books will just make you laugh! Some of his titles are The Grasshopper
Trap; The Night The Bear Ate Goombaw; The Bear In The Attic….so on and so
forth……we have some non-fiction, informative, serious, and rather depressing
stuff too……..let us know what you want to read or what you need to
read………and….especially what you don’t want to read……. <><><> Tuesday and Thursday Graduate classes are
being held in the library…..we are inviting students to use the library on
those evenings for study and book checkout and you may use the computers if the
Graduate class is not. SET YOUR CELL PHONE ON VIBRATE AND
DON’T ANSWER IT!!!
