public domain?” You must cite the date
this happened along with the full name of the president. In addition, you must cite the information on
treaties pertaining to this answer.
(Contained with the official language of the Act.) The first correct email I get will win a
Student Support Services t-shirt! (I
don’t know, does anyone else know? MP)
Development (Marilyn
Pourier)___There was a wonderful article in the August 29th
edition of the RC Journal titled Language
Teacher’s Actions Speak Loudly by Jomay Steen. The article reports on the
work John Around Him has done in the SD prisons, jails and detention centers –
“visiting inmates, determined to create change.” He was honored by The SD Department of
Corrections for his “years of work in keeping the cultural heritage alive for
those living in prisons and for training prison staff on cultural
sensitivity.” By executive order Governor
Rounds proclaimed August 28,
2006 as John Around Him Day. “I don’t know when I will be called home,
but I want you to continue on with my work. The students they all need to
learn. They will carry on; they will
learn the words and the songs” he said of his Lakota ceremonial songs. He said he looked after the inmates, never
wanting to refer to them as bad people but relatives, who needed help,
spiritual help and a new life. -- What a wonderful person and a
wonderful role model for our youth!! <><><> In the last Bulletin I mentioned briefly another
article in the RC Journal. The article
is dated Aug. 18, 2006
and is titled NEW: Uranium, heavy
metal contamination report given. In the
article it says – Using a geological probe, Schwalm and his crew of six OLC and Tech students took soil core samples
in June and July to examine sediment around the outlying ranches and state land
bordering the Forest Service area. <><><> This and more on these two stories but you
will have to look up the articles yourself for the rest of the story (too lengthy to print all). <><><> One more thing. I had a drawing – for college centers only –
for a donated art print by Bev Dolittle.
And, the winner was Eagle Nest!!
Student Services
(Billi Hornbeck)___The Scholarship Deadline has

Book Signing -- Date: Saturday, September 16th -- Time:
4pm-6pm -- Place: Prairie
Edge
Prairie Edge welcomes Native American author Tim Giago
signing his new book titled
Children Left Behind: The Dark Legacy of Indian Mission
Boarding Schools
By Tim Giago, with illustrations by Denise
Giago. Renowned Native
American journalist Tim Giago weaves memoir, commentary, reflection and poetry
together to boldly illustrate his often-horrific experiences as a child at an
Indian Mission boarding school run by the Catholic Church. Through his words,
the experience of one Indian child becomes a metaphor for the experience of
many who were literally ripped from their tribal roots and torn from their
families for nine months of the year in order to be molded to better fit into
mainstream America.
Dramatic and intensely moving black-and white illustrations by Giago’s daughter
Denise illuminate the text.
