Business Office (Arlene Quist)___Please get all mileage, travel, invoices, etc into the business office before October 15th.  Our fiscal year ends on September 30, 2006 and we need to start closing the books.  Dept Chairs and Directors – Please be sure all mileage is turned in for traveling through September.  <><><>   Please remember to keep a log of all long distance calls you are making from PW.  Keep the log starting the 15th of September and turn it in on the 15 of October, starting another log of your long distance calls on October 15th through the 14 of November and so on and so on.  You can turn in an electronic copy or hard copy.  Thanks for your cooperation.

 

Humanities & Social Sciences (Dr. Paul Robertson)___Funding opportunity for community development:  The Northwest Area Fund's Horizon Project provides seed money for leadership and community development. The Fund's Avery Thompson out of Fort Thompson, and Al Nygard of Standing Rock College, will introduce the project at an introductory session in OLC's Learning Resource Center at Piya Wiconi on September 28 from 9-3. College employees and community members interested in leadership development, land issues, and community development are encouraged to attend. Contact Paul Robertson, Humanities and Social Sciences Chair, for more information.   <><><>   Liberal Arts degrees:  The Humanities and Social Sciences Department now has an AA and BA degree in Liberal Arts, joining the over 1200 small colleges nationwide that offer Liberal Arts Degrees. OLC's degree affords students the opportunity for a Liberal Arts education with options in Literature and Communication or the Social Sciences at the Bachelor's level. A PR campaign highlighting the degrees is planned for the near future.


Ag & Natural Resources (Leslie Henry)___There are indoor herb gardens available.  It's been requested that a $30 donation be made for each herb garden. The donation will be to Can Wigmunke -- The Rainbow Tree. They are a community based effort to improve the environment. Children from Kyle worked all summer on this project which is a part of Dr. Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program. For more information call Patricia Hammond at 454-4114 or 685-2045. All donations will be used in future projects.

 

Student Services (Billi Hornbeck)___THE SCHOLARSHIP MEETING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 19 AND 20TH AT PIYA WICONI.

 

Personnel Office (Christina Janis)___Reminder:  Open Season will close on September 29th. Remember you have the option of making changes/additions/deletions to your optional benefits. (Health, vision, dental or additional life insurance) You may get the required forms from the Personnel Office or call us and we will either mail them to you or put them in your mail box here at Piya Wiconi. If you wish to cancel a benefit please send an email or memo to our office.  <><><>  FYI – for current vacancy announcements and/or an OLC application you may visit the Personnel section on the OLC website.

Learning Resource Ctr ( Michele May)___ The Prime Time Reading Program will meet each Saturday at Woksape Tipi through October 21, 2006.  The only requirement to attend is that a parent, guardian, aunt, uncle, older sister, brother, cousin…….an adult must accompany their children and participate in the reading sessions.  We had a great time and look forward to this Saturday!!!!!   We will see you all at the library!!!!!

Board of Trustees/Local Board Elections

Oglala Lakota College will hold Board of Trustees and Local Board elections in conjunction with the Oglala Sioux Tribe General Election on November 7, 2006.

There are five Board of Trustees positions open.  Those districts are Pine Ridge, Oglala, Wounded Knee, Pass Creek, and Eagle Nest.

There are fourteen Local Board positions open.  Those districts are:  Eagle Nest (1), Oglala (1), Pass

Creek (1), Pine Ridge (1), Wounded Knee (1), East Wakpamni (2), Pejuta Haka (3), LaCreek (2), and Pahin Sinte (2).

Any registered eligible Tribal member who meets the district residency requirement may run for a position on the main Board of Trustees or the Local Board in that district.

Petitions will be available September 18, 2006.  Board of Trustees petitions must be picked up and returned to the President’s Office at Piya Wiconi by the person running for office.  Local Board petitions can be picked up from the President’s Office or the local district college center but they must be turned in to the President’s Office at Piya Wiconi by the person running for office.  Each petition must have AT LEAST twenty five (25) valid signatures of district residents.

All Main/Local Board members are subject to Alcohol and Substance Abuse test as per OLC Policy.

Deadline for submission of ALL petitions is September 29, 2006 at 5:00 p.m.

Sept. 11, 2006             Press Release on OLC Elections and Deadlines for Petitions.

Sept. 18, 2006             Petitions will be available at Piya Wiconi for Board of Trustee positions and at the

                                    Local college centers for Local Board Positions.

Sept. 18, 2006             Posting of voter lists.

Sept. 29, 2006             All Petitions must be returned to Piya Wiconi Administration Building.

Oct. 13, 2006              Petitions will be certified by the Election Committee.

Oct. 20, 2006              Sample Ballots will be posted in polling places and public areas.

Oct. 26, 2006              Training of Judges and Tellers at Piya Wiconi at 10:00 a.m.

Nov. 7, 2006               In conjunction with OST General Election.  OLC Board Election will be

                                    Held from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at designated Polling places.

Nov. 8, 2006               Unofficial Election results will be posted.

Nov. 10, 2006             Deadline for contest of unofficial elections results.

Nov. BOT, 2006          Official Election Report filed with OLC Board of Trustees.

Dec. 2006                    New Local Board Members officially seated at Board of Trustees Meeting.

Walk/Ride in Memory of Theresa Lebeau on October 1, 2006 The family of Theresa “Tess” Lebeau invites you to a walk/ride in memory of Tess – sister, auntie, mother, grandmother and friend to so many.   Tess worked in the Student Fund Account section of OLC’s business office for many years.  The walk/ride will begin at the Pahin Sinte CC at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1st, ending at Our Lady of Lourdes to be followed by a meal and giveaway.  T-shirts for all participants in the memorial walk/ride.  Contact Janice Richards at 867-5404 for more info on the walk/ride and to contribute to the cost of the t-shirts.  The family would be most appreciative of any help you can give toward the meal.
