OLC Weekly Bulletin October 9-13, 2006
President’s Office (Thomas Shortbull)___A reminder of the all staff meeting on Friday, October 13th starting at 10:00 a.m. The committee meetings will commence
immediately after the all staff meeting.
In order to provide a meal for everyone (150-160) you will need to bring
some kind of dish. See your email memo
regarding the food or item that it is your department’s responsibility to
furnish. I ask that you continue
to honor Calvin Jumping Bull’s memory by following his teachings. He reminded the staff more than once in the all
staff meetings to keep in mind the Lakota virtues of “sharing and generosity” when
it seemed we were running short of food before everyone was fed. It seems the contributions to the potluck
portion of the noon meal has become less each month. We only have these meetings once a month so
it should not present a hardship to furnish a potluck dish. All staff el
canteyukeya
woyute ah yau ow pe kte allstaff (be generous and bring food to all staff). Pilamaya

Humanities and Social Sciences Department
(Dr. Paul Roberston)___Upcoming
Assessment Party: There is a
tradition in the department. It's called "holistic scoring." It's
open to all faculty (full-time or part-time). It's interesting, important,
informative, and instrumental in helping develop the writing skills of Oglala Lakota
College students. That's
right - not just students in our department, but students in every department.
You have a chance to become part of this tradition toward the end of this
semester. All you need to do is to contribute your time - usually about 1/2 day
or less. If you've already participated, you know the drill. Otherwise, you'll
have a chance to learn how to do "holistic scoring" and to
participate in a lively session. Lively? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Why? Because of the varied perspectives that
faculty invariably bring to the table. The discussions are sane, safe, subtle,
and sophisticated. And they're civil -
not combative. What more could you ask
for? Watch this space for updates on the
holistic scoring piece. We'll be setting a date soon. And yes, there will be wahampi and other good eats as well. <><><> A free e-library with full text articles on
Service Learning is available at http://servicelearning.org/lib_svcs/lib_cat/fulltext.php. Those of you interested in Service Learning
and the opportunities available for OLC courses might want to check out the
free e-library. After checking out some
of the resources you might decide you want to work on a Service Learning
offering in the coming semester or year.
Faculty Development (Doug Noyes, Chair)___The
Faculty Development Committee will be hosting a banquet and seminar in
November. The dates are November
10th and 11th. The topics will include student retention,
advising and developmental programs. Please watch for more information.

Gonzaga
University/MBA Program Degree. Stacey
Chapman from Gonzaga
University was here to
visit and she left some packets for anyone interested in getting an MBA Program
Degree. The Johnson Scholarship Foundation will pay for the complete
degree. All you need to do is make an
initial visit, pass the GMAT Exam, and all of the Program can be done over the
Internet with the exception of six weeks
in the summer. They usually pay for you and your immediate family to live
on campus during this time. All you need is the commitment. Stacey
said if anyone had questions to feel free to call her. She said it is
also open to all our graduates. If you know of someone wanting to advance
their education, this is an excellent opportunity. The visitors this morning from the Johnson
Foundation wondered why they have attendees from all the Tribal Colleges that
they serve but OLC. I could not answer that. I have five packets in
my office that anyone could pick up and I can get more if we need it.
Don’t pass up this opportunity if you desire higher education. A practice copy of the GMAT is on the
Library Web site. A copy can also be sent to you from Stacey. You
may take the test as many times as you like. The JSF will pay for you to
take it twice. Contact Marilyn Kockrow @ 455-6076.
