Oglala Lakota College Course Syllabus - Fall 2003 Supporting Network Operating Systems 3 Credits Department of Science, Math & Technology IT 423 Brett Bump - Wicotawacin Woksape 6-8pm Email - bbump@olc.edu Course Description Advanced network commands and utilities will be demonstrated to you to further supplement the skills required by a network administrator. Directory structures, security, printing and network administration will be covered. Troubleshooting methods and procedures will be discussed for workstations, servers and related hardware, and printing systems. Hardware and software to aid with problem identification and resolution will be discussed and demonstrated where possible. Network optimization and disaster recovery will be covered as well as copyright issues and ethics involved with computer operations. Prerequisites Prerequisites: permission of instructor. Text & Materials ISBN: 1-56592-400-2 LINUX Network Admin Guide Descriptive Reading Load The book for this class will teach the student about various network applications in use on both intranetworks and the internet. The text presents these applications from a unix perspective. The role of the student is to understand that these applications are are not os specific and similar across differing platforms. Expect to read two chapters per week. Types and Amounts of Research Expected You will be required to research and discuss the information you have been assigned each week based on the current chapter assignments. Course Requirements You will be required to use a computer for class assignments (computers provided at college center). Homework The homework assigned will be any computer research the student deems necessary to help facilitate their understanding of the materials they are reading and to aid in the comprehension thereof. Class Participation You will be required to answer questions verbally and/or write solutions in front of the class. You will be expected to give oral presentations in class. Labs You will be required to participate in the class labs in addition to the evening classes. The labs are worth 50% of your grade. Midterm & Final This class will spend much of it's time learning how individual network applications are configured. As such there will be weekly quizes about these individual applications instead of a midterm and final. The quizes are worth 50% of your grade.
